Six foot bamboo canes are the cheapest option, but 1.2 or 1.4 metre galvanised steel or glassfibre poles are best for the long term. The vine support pole (6 mm diameter steel or 7 mm diameter Glassfibre) needs to be pushed into the soil, about 25 mm from the vine,
to a good depth sufficient to hold the pole vertical and firmly in situ. It is very beneficial to support the vine-stocks vertically for many years, otherwise they become bowed, which is a disadvantage if you use an in-the-row cultivator
where the sensor-rod detects the vine-stock.

Bamboo canes break at soil level after a few years, so need to be pushed into the soil again every couple of years.
