Winegrowers Supplies  -  Rubber-impeller pumps

Notes:-

The internal diameter of the hose must be large enough so that significant turbulence does not occur in the flow:-

20 mm internal diameter, up to 3,500 litres/hour,
25 mm internal diameter, up to 5,470 litres/hour,
32 mm internal diameter, up to 8,960 litres/hour,
38 mm internal diameter, up to 12,600 litres/hour,
50 mm internal diameter, up to 21,900 litres/hour,
60 mm internal diameter, up to 31,500 litres/hour.

Where pump speeds are stated (litres/hour), this is the maximum, at zero pressure. The speed reduces as pump-head-height increases, typically 5000 litres/hour would reduce to 3000 litres/hour at 2.0 bar pressure.
A bypass, where specified, will allow speed to be reduced and provide pressure control.

Although mohno-pumps are superior, rubber-impeller pumps are much cheaper and also will pump liquids with suspended solids, so they are useful for: pumping press juice, racking from one tank to another etc. They are particularly useful for pumping very thick liquids (tomato juice, condensed milk etc).

In my opinion they are not ideal for sterile filtration with sheet filters, because the slight pressure fluctuation could push yeasts through the very smallest holes in the filter sheet. They can be used for coarse filtration.

As the impeller revolves in the pump casing, a partial vacuum is created at the suction side of the pump by an increase volume, drawing in fluid. This fluid is then transported to the other side of the pump in the spaces between the vanes and the fixed casing. At the discharge side, the available volume is decreased and the resultant increase in pressure forces the fluid into the outlet line. The change in volume is the result of a curvature of the vanes in the pump body.

The impeller is made of an extremely elastic rubber which is lubricated and cooled by the liquid flowing.
There are different rubber materials available:-

Neoprene is the standard:- the maximum liquid temperature for a Neoprene impeller is 60 °C.
Perbunan (NBR)
EPDM
or
Silicone:-
Viton (for higher temperature)

The question whether a pump is 'self-priming' is often asked. Manufacturers often state that pumps are self-priming, it is a matter of what they mean by self-priming !
The pump chamber will be self-primed from liquid that is just outside the pump chamber. It will not suck liquid along an attached hose unless the chamber is primed with liquid.
If it runs dry for more than a few seconds the rubber impeller will burn; the rubber tips then expand.
You don't need to replace the rubber impeller until it won't pump any more, it should last a long time but it's worthwhile to keep a spare.

Spiral reinforced wine-quality hard-PVC tubing is sometimes used on the inlet side to prevent the tubing collapsing under suction.

When choosing from the following models, the factors to consider are: voltage (230 or 380 Volt), maximum speed, with or without bypass, thread connections,
one-direction or reversible motor, stainless steel or nylon body, motor rotation speed (lower is better), mounting on wheeled trolley or with a carrying handle:-

EP: Italian:-  a range of models with variations, stainless steel housing and impeller shaft:-

EP Mini: 1400 litres/hour, 3-phase 380 Volt, 1400 rpm, ¾" bsp male threads, 725 Euros

EP Minor with bypass: 7000 litres/hour, 3-phase 380 Volt, low rotation speed 900 rpm, DN50 male threads, 1744 Euros

EP Major with bypass: 18,000 litres/hour, 3-phase 380 Volt, low rotation speed 700 rpm, DN65 male threads, 2505 Euros

optional extras:-

wheeled trolley to mount the pump on.

Electrical Float kit, wired up ready for use, 170 Euros
+ 60 Euros for an additional capacitor for starter protection; this is not needed if it's used with a JIM-G5 pump.

The float 'swims' in the liquid, when it hangs down the pump is switched off and when the float lifts up it switches on.
It achieves this by disconnecting the electricity within the special float-switch plug.
A weight is included in the kit, to overcome the problem of apple juice foam lifting the float.

The float-switch has a special Continental plug, an adaptor is needed to plug this into a UK 13 amp electric socket.
The pump has a normal Continental plug, which is plugged into the back of this float-switch plug.
If the pump is to be used without the float-switch then it is plugged directly into the adaptor, without using the plug for the float-switch.

Internal bypasses on most rubber impeller pumps are expensive, but a bypass can be made by fitting T-pieces directly on the inlet and outlet threads, with a connecting hose between them. A stainless steel ball-valve is then fitted in the bypass loop (directly on the T-piece outlet from the pump). With this valve open the liquid being pumped will take the path of least resistance which is back around the bypass loop, especially as there may also be a suction effect on the bypass hose at the inlet side of the pump. Closing the valve restricts the flow around the bypass, thus increasing the flow through the outlet hose.
Parts needed can be found in valves and connectors.
