BSP (British Standard Pipe) threads can be parallel or tapered. Tapered threads are for permanent connection only and are considered 'not hygienic'. Parallel threads are hygenic, threads should be sealed with ptfe tape for permanent connection (for example valves), or will be fitted with a rubber seal if the fittings are to be removed regularly (for example hose-tail-connectors).
