Hibernal (originally known as Gm. 322 58)
Mother: Seibel 7053 = (Chancellor x Riesling) x (Seibel 7053 x Riesling). It contains genes from Vitis labrusca, Vitis lincecumii, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera.
Father: Riesling, said to be clone 239. Note: clonal selection of vines started in Germany in 1928, it takes 25 years to formally register a clone.
A white Piwi/disease-resistant variety, with some similarities to Sauvignon blanc and Scheurebe.
Year of breeding: 1944, by Heinrich Birk. Variety protection since 1977.
The variety was selected in 1958 from a seedling population of a breeding strain from 1944 that had freely flowered in 1947.
